ChromeOS boots in seconds, updates itself, and is close to unbreakable by a child - there is no registry to corrupt and very little malware that targets it. At 11.6" it fits in a school bag without thought, and the ARM processor means it runs cool and quietly with no fan.

What it is not

It is not a Windows laptop. It will not run Office desktop applications, Photoshop, or PC games - it runs web apps and Android apps. 4GB of memory and 32GB of storage are exactly enough for that and no more; keep files in Google Drive rather than on the machine. If you need Windows, the Acer E10 in this collection starts at R8 699 and is the honest alternative.

FEATURES:

ChromeOS - automatic updates, fast boot, minimal maintenance

MediaTek Kompanio 528 ARM processor, fanless and cool-running

11.6" screen in a compact, schoolbag-sized body

Access to Google Workspace and Android apps

3 year Acer warranty - unusually long at this price

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: Acer Chromebook 311 (C723-TCO-K1K9 / NX.KKAEA.001)

Processor: MediaTek Kompanio 528

Memory: 4GB

Storage: 32GB eMMC

Display: 11.6"

Operating system: ChromeOS

Warranty: 3 years

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

Acer Chromebook 311

Power adapter

Documentation

Why Acer?

Acer has been building school Chromebooks longer than most and it shows in the warranty: three years on a R6 499 machine is not something you see often.
